A beautiful sidesword of 106.8cm in length, sold by Czerny's auction house for €4,300. The c.1500 sword, originating from Villa Basilica in Italy, bears the mark of the Biscotto(i) family. We are told:
See the same mark on a sword held at the Royal Armouries, inventory IX.984. The mark belongs to the renowned Biscotto family of swordsmiths based in Villa Basilica. It is recorded that Cosimo de' Medici, wishing to acquire high-prestige swords, turned to Villa Basilicata and sent his secretary for this purpose. The family, already renowned in the 15th century, continued to distinguish itself throughout most of the 16th century for producing high-quality swords.
My estimates give a blade 93cm long and 3.5cm wide. The grip is only 7.5cm long. No information on the weight is available. While I would put this sword a few decades into the 1500s, the length and width of the blade make this a sidesword that would make good use of the Bolognese system.
